Parts of the score can be removed to focus on the dialogue or just have silence in the scene, other parts may be cut differently, moved to different scenes entirely or even duplicated to cover a new scene or beat that cannot be scored properly now due to time constraints. When the score iteself is done, there's still a lot of sound editing going into final mix. This practice gets criticized because often directors would see the scene so many times with the temp music, they cannot imagine it any other way, forcing composers to essentially imitate the work of others.

For example, when X-Men Origins: Wolverine workprint leaked online, it had a lot of score from Transformers (2007) in it. Long-running franchises such as Pirates of the Carribean or Harry Potter can afford to reuse their own, but most of the time it's the most random stuff. When assembling scenes, editors almost always use a "temp track", which means re-using either royalties-free classic music or score from other movies.

Then, once there's an edit to work with, they can use those themes to score according with the flow of each scene.Īnd then of course there's plenty of cases in both film and TV when the composer gets to watch the pretty much final cut with incomplete effects and sound mix, writes the score to match that and that pretty much goes in as is. In long-running franchises that retain the same composer (Game of Thrones, LOST, Middle-Earth movies) a composer can speend weeks or even months working with no footage, just creating themes for the characters. James Gunn in particular has much of the score done before even the principal photography so that it can be played on set - I am not aware of any other productions that do that. the MCU has so few examples of that across 23 films and 3 series, it’s embarrassing.Īll of this being said, natalie holt’s loki score is easily the best that’s ever come out of the MCU, and the first one that i’ve ever heard in its respective show/film and said “i need that album in my library, now.”ĭifferent productions use different methods. and every time she appears, it’s her theme, but altered to reflect the time period or what her character is going through. she’s appeared in 4 films - batman v superman, wonder woman, justice league, and wonder woman 1984. there’s no consistency, no thematic development.Ĭompare that to wonder woman’s theme in the DCEU. Michael giacchino also wrote awesome themes for spiderman and doctor strange, but no other composers will use them. The avengers theme is great, but it never develops and alan silvestri’s MCU scores outside of when he’s directly blasting that theme are all but white noise. I mean, even henry jackman, who scored winter soldier, civil war, and then falcon and the winter soldier, has been scoring the same characters since 2014 and the only ounce of consistency is that winter soldier screeching sound effect, which is probably temp scored in before he writes notes. every composer on the franchise seems too ignorant to retain themes written by other composers, so no character has a musical identity - they change every film. My biggest gripe with the MCU is that the soundtracks just…they’re a mess. The sooner people realise this, the better. Disney is evil as shit I'm telling you guys. If they had balls, they would've made Carol and Maria an explicit couple (especially when everything in the film directly and thematically hinted towards that) instead of referring them to as "best friends" and then later retconning them into a couple as soon as getting rid of Maria to promote the "bury the gays" trope while also avoiding having the two being together as a couple on screen.

They can keep introducing their first gay character in every one of their films and promise for more representation all they want to earn fake woke points from their moronic audience but I'll keep calling them out on their crap. That being said, Disney gets no points for me.

I love it and I still give it a full 5/5. She seems like a decent person so I'm not taking anything away from the show. And Herron also seems genuine in her storytelling.

Could not very well not be the case but it's implied so on a story level, it gets a pass. It's very much implied that Loki decides to be a hero and turns into a woman in order to be a Valkyrie. I love Loki & Sylvie together and in hindsight, Sylvie does have reason of being well.
